What is an Ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases or other conditions. Ophthalmologists also often provide routine eye care services such as prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. The training required to become an ophthalmologist includes at least four years of medical school (after undergraduate college); a one-year internship in general medicine, usually at a hospital; and a three-year residency in ophthalmology at an accredited teaching program.
What is an Optometrist?
Doctors of Optometry are health care providers that examine, diagnose and treat disorders of the eye and associated structures. Our optometrists provide comprehensive eye examinations; prescribe glasses, contact lenses and medications for eye conditions not requiring surgery. Optometric education generally consists of four years of undergraduate study and an additional four years of optometry school. Some optometrists complete postgraduate residencies in special areas of interest. All optometrists must complete a multi part national board examination and practical skills assessment before becoming licensed.
How to Choose a an Eye Doctor
It is very important that when deciding on your eye doctor that you do your research. Not only do you want a skilled person, but one that you to trust and feel comfortable with him/her. Typically if you are not seeing an ophthalmologist then your optometrist will be able to give you some suggestions and also lend a hand in the post-operative care of your eyes. A quality surgeon will discuss lens implants for after the cataract has been removed. They have options now for premium lens implants that can even enable you to see after cataract surgery without glasses or contact lenses. It is important to have a consultation with a cataract surgeon regarding lens implants. If you were eligible for a premium lens implant that helps you see at all distances this would be a far better option. Be sure your cataract surgeon is skilled with both traditional and premium lens implants. Some other factors that you should consider
- Experience - How long the doctor has been performing eye surgeries, specifically the one you are interested in having done.
- Testimonials - Try to seek out firsthand stories from former patients of the surgeon you’re interested in.
- Attitude - During your preliminary visit, consider the general attitude of the surgeon and staff when interacting with them. If you don’t feel comfortable, keep looking.
