Dr. Susan Gromacki brought almost 20 years of experience to Washington Eye, which she joined in 2012. An internationally-recognized expert in contact lens design, fitting, and care, she has dedicated her professional life to improving her patients’ vision through the application of specialty lenses for keratoconus, presbyopia, post-refractive surgery, post-corneal transplant, aphakia, astigmatism, and dry eye.

She graduated with from the University of Notre Dame (B.S. with honors) and The Ohio State University College of Optometry (O.D. with honors) and is one of fewer than 5% of optometrists to complete a hospital-based residency program in ocular disease. In addition, she earned a Master of Science (M.S.) in Physiological Optics; her graduate school curriculum was concentrated in corneal physiology and contact lens optics. The focus of her research—and the topic of her Master’s Degree thesis, over 200 pages long—was keratoconus.

She is invited to lecture worldwide, instructing her colleagues on the topics of refractive surgery, anterior segment disease, and contact lenses. She has presented over 400 professional lectures and publications and serves as Contributing Editor of Contact Lens Spectrum, Review of Cornea and Contact Lenses, and CL Today. She has been named to “America’s Best Optometrists,” the Marquis Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, and The Leading Health Care Professionals of the World (International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England). She has been interviewed by various television stations, newspapers, and radio stations, including NBC 8, FOX 2, CBS 62, WJR 760, The Milan News, The Saline Reporter, The Missaukee Sentinel, April 20, The Clare Sentinel, and The Ontonagon Herald.

In addition, she is one of only 166 optometrists worldwide to have earned the distinction of Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Technologies section of the American Academy of Optometry. She is also a Fellow in the organization and a member of its leadership. She currently serves on the Leadership Board of the Cornea, Contact Lenses and Refractive Technologies section and completed a term on the leadership of the Communications Committee, with which she chaired, organized, and moderated the Press Conference at the Annual Meeting. In addition, she serves on the Part II Committee and Council of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, writing and overseeing the written examinations that ensure the qualifications of new optometrists to enter practice.

Formerly a faculty member of the New England College of Optometry and the University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology, where she directed the Contact Lens and Low Vision Clinics, she is the Director of the Contact Lens Service at Washington Eye Physicians and Surgeons. At Washington Eye, she performs general eye examinations, contact lens fittings, and post-operative care.
